IAMA Training Overview
The Institute is one of Australiasia's leading providers of alternative dispute resolution training courses.
We provide an Australia-wide and international network of experts in ADR practice, theory and training.
This network includes lawyers, academics, engineers, architects, accountants and others who by their experience have proved their expertise in the field of alternative dispute resolution.
In its core business of providing arbitration and mediation services the Institute has, through its panel of experienced arbitrators and mediators, conducted hundreds of arbitrations and mediations. This vast practical experience enables it to deliver services which are at the forefront of practice in the alternative dispute resolution field.
We can provide our specially prepared regular programs or tailor a program to your particular needs be it for individuals and organisations. The Institute focuses on assessing the needs of the particular participants and their organisational contexts.
Experienced coaches are used where appropriate to provide feedback, encouragement and guidance to participants.
Every course is reviewed and evaluated. Evaluation is sought from all participants, both in the form of written questionnaires and in group debriefing discussions held at the end of courses.

The New Australian National Mediator Standards
IAMA has taken a strongly supportive and active role throughout the development of an independent, voluntary scheme within which mediators can seek national accreditation under a set of new approval and practice standards. As their name suggests, the new National Mediator Standards have national application and became effective on 1 January 2008. The effectiveness of the National Mediator Accreditation Scheme will depend on the participation of agencies that carry the status of being a Recognised Mediator Accreditation Body (RMAB).
As one of the largest RMABs, IAMA plays a key role in providing assistance for:
- People wishing to be trained and assessed in accordance with the requirements set out in the Australian National Mediator Standards
- Trained mediators seeking national accreditation under the new National Approval Standards
- Existing IAMA accredited mediators seeking to gain national accreditation under the new National Approval Standards
- Nationally accredited mediators seeking to maintain their compliance with the criteria set out in the new National Practice Standards
Existing mediator members of IAMA should note that these new National Standards are separate from IAMA’s own internal Competencies and Principles for Accredited Mediators.
