The conduct of the Institute's affairs is vested in the national Council.  The Council is charged with the policy development, management and direction of the Institute.  At the 29 May 2009 Council meeting, the following members were elected for the 2009 - 2010 term.

Michael Kirby was, until 2 February 2009, one of the seven Justices of Australia's highest constitutional and appellate court, the High Court of Australia. He served there from his appointment on 6 February 1996. At the end of that service he was Australia's longest serving judicial officer having been:
  • A deputy president of the Australian Conciliation and Arbitration Commission 1975-1983;
  • Inaugural chairman of the Australian Law Reform Commission 1975-1984;
  • A judge of the Federal Court of Australia 1983-1984;
  • President of the New South Wales Court of Appeal 1984-1996;
  • President of the Court of Appeal of Solomon Islands 1995-1996;
  • A justice of the High Court of Australia 1996-2009.

In addition to these posts, Michael Kirby has served in many international and United Nations positions, two expert groups of the OECD, Paris, many bodies of the Commonwealth Secretariat, London and positions in the ILO, UNDP, UNESCO, UNODC, WHO Global Commission on AIDS, and UNAIDS. He was President of the International Commission of Jurists 1995-1998 and served as Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations for Human Rights in Cambodia 1993-1996. He has been a member of the governing body of three Australian universities, ultimately being elected as Chancellor of Macquarie University in Sydney 1984-1993. He holds 16 honorary degrees of Doctor of Letters, Doctor of Laws and Doctor of the University from 12 Australian and foreign universities and various other appointments. ANTHONY GRIEVE

Anthony Grieve is the Vice President of the Institute of Arbitrators & Mediators Australia (IAMA) and is a lawyer and engineer. From 1968-1990 he acted as a designer and project manager of building and engineering contractors. Practices as an arbitrator, referee, mediator and expert determiner. Chairman of the Joint Venture for the Implementation of the ADR in ICT project which was recently launched by Senator Helen Coonan. Initiated the
Memorandum of Cooperation between Engineers Australia and IAMA.

Laurie James

Laurie James, is a barrister and solicitor,
and is Chairman of Partners with Kott Gunning Lawyers. He is the Deputy Chairman (Western Australia) of the Construction and Infrastructure Law Committee of the Law Council of Australia, the Convenor of the Western Australian Dispute Resolution Service and the Gas Disputes Arbitrator under the Gas Pipelines Access (Western Australia) Act 1998 and the Economic Regulation Authority. He is also a member of the Australian Institute of Judicial
Administration.

Andrew Robertson

Andrew Robertson is a partner in the national dispute resolution practice of Piper Alderman. Andrew has degrees in Economics, Law (with Honours) and Commerce. In addition to practising as part of Piper Alderman’s national dispute resolution team, Andrew is also a qualified accountant (CPA), graded arbitrator and accredited mediator.

Associate Professor Angela O'Brien has over 20 years experience in academia with senior management and leadership positions since 1993, including foundation Head of Creative Arts, University of Melbourne and Deputy Dean of Graduate Research. She has widespread governance and committee experience on educational, professional and community bodies. An extensive background in teaching, research and publication includes funding and partnership relationships with Government and Industry, including the Australian Research Council, the Australia Council, the Victorian Departments of Justice, Human Services and Education, VicHealth and Arts Victoria. Her ADR expertise is in arts and cultural organisations, educational sectors, government sectors, and the workplace. In addition to her IAMA responsibilities, Angela O’Brien serves on the National Mediation Accreditation Implementation Committee

Bryan Ahern

\Bryan Ahern is a civil engineer with extensive experience in civil and building construction as well as maintenance works. He is a Grade 2 Arbitrator, Accredited Mediator and Registered Mediator under the ACT’s Mediation Act and a Class A Builder. He is currently involved in project management of large scale property developments and consults on various forms of commercial contracts throughout all stages: from concept development through to documentation, tendering, administration, and dispute resolution and has been involved high profile projects that include Sydney Airport Parallel Runway, New and Old Parliament Houses, F4 Tollway Sydney, and the National Museum of Australia. He has been a member of the Master Builders Association National Contracts Committee and Standards Australia OB/3 Sub Committee on AS 2124/AS 4000 suite of General Conditions of Contract.

Scott ellis

Scott Ellis is a barrister at Francis Burt Chambers, Perth.  He practices in the areas of commercial litigation and alternative dispute resolution.  He is accredited as a mediator by Leadr and is on the WA Supreme Court List of Mediators.  He is also a graded arbitrator and an adjudicator registered under the Construction Contracts Act 2004 (WA).  He is a part time member of the Superannuation Complaints Tribunal and is a referee under the Insurance Ombudsman Scheme.  He was a Commissioner of the District Court of Western Australia in 2006 and before that a partner at Freehills for a number of years.

Warren Fischer is the managing director of Alternative Dispute Resolution Services Pty Ltd and during the past 25 years has worked in Australia, Indonesia and the United Kingdom as a Civil and Structural Engineer. Warren has undertaken feasibility studies, design, construction, project and contract management in the building, construction and mining arenas. Warren presently practices exclusively in alternative dispute resolution and associated fields in the building, civil, mining and body corporate arenas. Robert Hunt

Robert Hunt was President of IAMA from 2000 to 2002. He practises as a barrister and dispute resolver, and is a member of numerous arbitration and ADR panels in Australia and overseas. He practices in domestic and international disputes, usually in construction, engineering, commercial and IP matters. He is a director of ACICA, the Australian National Representative for the IBA Mediation Committee, and is a member of the Trade & Arbitration Rules Committee of the International Seed Federation. He has written the IAMA Rules for various dispute resolution processes, the ASF Dispute Resolution Scheme, various IAMA Practice Notes, three chapters in ‘A Guide to Arbitration Practice in Australia’ 2nd ed., and many published articles on arbitration and ADR in Australia and overseas. Graeme Robinson works in the international mining and construction industry in the management and construction of multi billion dollar projects and as the determiner of disputes in Australia as arbitrator and court referee, and mediator of mining and construction disputes in Australia, the Pacific Islands, Asia, and the Middle East. He is the NSW Chapter vice Chairman and mediation committee convenor.

RON SALTER

Ron Salter has almost 40 years experience practising as a litigation and dispute resolution lawyer with an emphasis on transport, maritime law and marine insurance.

Ron's maritime experience includes such diverse areas as salvage, pollution, charterparty arbitrations and bill of lading disputes. Ron's experience ranges across other transport regimes from aviation to professional liability disputes.

Ron is accredited as a Grade 1 arbitrator by the Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Ron's arbitration experience covers a wide range of domestic and international commercial disputes including shipping, aviation, insurance, partnerships, trading, travel, property and construction.

Ron is regularly listed as a leading maritime, litigation and commercial arbitration lawyer in various independent publications such as the Euromoney Guide to the World's Shipping & Maritime Lawyers, Asia Pacific Legal 500, Australian Legal Who's Who and Who's Who Legal: The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers.

John Rundell is a chartered accountant and Managing Principal of a chartered accounting firm John Rundell and Co and also Managing Director of a specialist consulting firm Stratica.  He is also a director of a Victorian Regional Water Authority where he chairs their audit and risk committee.

John has been involved in ADR and expert advisory roles for nearly 20 years. He has worked extensively internationally and for several years in Asia while with a major international accounting firm where he was a partner. He is chair of the ADR Committee of LawAsia, on a number of International Arbitration Centre panels including the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre where he is on both the panel of Arbitrators and panel of Mediators. He is a sessional member of VCAT, a member of the Social Security Appeals Tribunal. He is also a member of the Forensic Accounting Special Interest Group of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Paul Crowley

Paul Crowley commenced as the CEO of the Institute of Arbitrators & Mediators Australia (IAMA) in April 2009. Previously, Paul has held various senior management positions in the mediation industry including Director, Community Justice Centres (NSW) and Director,
ADR for Uniting Care Unifam (NSW). For six years Paul both
created and led Roundtable Dispute Management, Victoria Legal Aid's innovative high volume and best practice family law ADR service. Paul has 20 years experience as a mediator and social worker specialising in dispute system design for complex high conflict families. Paul is a Registered Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner and has been closely involved in the development of the National Mediation Accreditation System (NMAS).
